As the scale and devastation of wildland fires and wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires continue to increase, impacting different regions around the world, there is an ever-growing urgency for researchers, including those in combustion research, to work to alleviate this issue.

To this end, two members of The Combustion Institute, Sayaka Suzuki (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Samuel L. Manzello (Reax Engineering and Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University) recently served as guest editors for a special issue of Combustion Science and Technology on this topic.
