page166Dear members and friends of The Combustion Institute,

Hopefully all of you who attended have made it home safely from an exciting International Combustion Symposium in Warsaw about a week ago. This Combustion Symposium week is typically packed with science in presentations, posters and discussions, and not all attending may have realized that at the same time, various decisions have been made by committees of The Combustion Institute. Those of you who could not participate will probably also welcome to receive more information.

Meetings included those of the Board of Directors, Members, Sections, Editorial Boards of the Institute’s Journals, Fnance Committee, and Executive Committee, bodies as described in the By-Laws of the Institute. It will still be some weeks before the approved minutes of these meetings are becoming available. Thus, only some items can be reported now.

The Board of Directors selected in a competitive decision from three propoals the site of the 2016 Symposium – which is Seoul, Korea. It voted also on Officers/members of the new Executive Committee which now is constituted of Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, Bielefeld University, Germany, President; James F. (Jim) Driscoll, University of Michigan, USA, Vice President/President-Elect; Reginald E. (Reggie) Mitchell, Stanford University, USA, Secretary; Marcus Aldén, Lund University, Sweden, Vice President for Sectional Affairs; Hideaki Kobayashi, Tohoku University, Japan, Secretary for Sectional Affairs; and Derek Dunn-Rankin, University of California, Irvine, USA, Treasurer. All previous Officers are gratefully acknowledged for their service to the Institute, especially Past President Charles K. (Charlie) Westbrook, who received a laudation by the incoming President at the banquet. Further, a change in the By-Laws was decided by the Board which enables electronic Board meetings between the biannual Combustion Symposia.

New Board members were elected in the Members’ Meeting (in alphabetical order): In-Seuck Jeung, Seoul National University, Korea; Stephen B. Pope, Cornell University, USA; Fei Qi, University of Science and Technology of China, China; Christof Schulz, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany; and Greg Smallwood, National Research Council, Canada. These members are welcomed for their willingness to serve, and we are especially grateful to those members whose terms have expired, i.e. Suk-Ho Chung, KAUST, Saudi Arabia; James (Jim) Ekmann, retired from Department of Energy, Pittsburgh, USA; Ömer Gülder, University of Toronto, Canada; and Norbert Peters, RWTH Aachen, Germany; for their continuing service to the Institute.

The new Program Chairs appointed for the organization of the technical program for the 35th International Combustion Symposium to be held in San Francisco, USA, in 2014 are Suk-Ho Chung, KAUST, Saudi Arabia and Thierry Poinsot, CNRS and CERFACS, Toulouse, France.

The Finance Committee, headed by Don Lucas, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, with members Peter Lindstedt, Imperial College, UK; Ken Brezinsky, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA; and Treasurer Derek Dunn-Rankin has convened to discuss financial status and matters of the Institute including some budget items. The new Executive Committee has also met and drafted a work plan with many action items for the near future. Officers have started to get acquainted with the details of the present status and business and begin to exchange ideas for new ways and projects.

While we ask for a bit of time to install new procedures, we imagine that you would appreciate more information in the future on actions in the Institute between Symposia. At present, we can provide you with updates under this “News” section. Information intended only for members may only be sent to you via the Sections at the moment. To provide more direct ways of communication, we will need your cooperation at some time in the near future. A concept for this process will be established by Marcus Aldén and Hideaki Kobayashi, and some test Sections have already been identified.

We are looking forward to working in The Combustion Institute for and with you!

Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus for the Executive Committee
