Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, CI President (2012-2016), Rosanna Diogini, Executive Publisher, Elsevier, and Prof. Adam Steinberg, at the 36th International Symposium on Combustion in Seoul, Korea

In this sixth installment of a seven-part series of articles, The Combustion Institute recognizes combustion scientists who were honored with medals and awards during the 36th International Symposium on Combustion. Adam Steinberg is the inaugural recipient of the Hiroshi Tsuji Early Career Researcher Award, for demonstrated excellence in fundamental or applied combustion science research.

Prof. Steinberg is the McCharles Fellow at the University of Toronto, Canada, where he leads a team of researchers working in the fields of turbulent combustion, combustion dynamics, gas turbine engines, and laser diagnostics. He earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan, United States, and subsequently worked at the German Aerospace Center Institute of Combustion Technology before joining the University of Toronto in 2011.

Dedicated to research, Prof. Steinberg’s work attempts to bridge the gaps between high-fidelity laser diagnostics, deep data mining, and combustion phenomena at engine-relevant conditions, with particular emphasis on using high-repetition-rate diagnostics to describe and quantify causality.

“Beyond the great honor I feel about receiving the inaugural Hiroshi Tsuji award, it both inspires and enables me to keep learning,” Prof. Steinberg said. “It is humbling to think about how much I do not know, even in the rather specific landscape of combustion diagnostics. I intend to use this award to foster new collaborations, opening new routes of inquiry for me and my students.”

Please join The Combustion Institute in congratulating Prof. Steinberg and the other honored 2016 award winners in the international combustion community. Questions regarding awards may be directed to: Office@CombustionInstitute.org.
