John Palmore Jr

Biography:
John Palmore Jr, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. Dr. Palmore studies droplet and spray combustion. His research has focused on development of numerical algorithms for high-fidelity simulations of liquid-gas flows involving heat transfer, vaporization, and combustion. Dr. Palmore attained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University working with Prof. Olivier Desjardins. Dr. Palmore is also interested in enhancing the state-of-the-art in engineering education, and he incorporates modern evidence-based practices into his class curriculum. In addition to his ESSCI membership, Dr. Palmore is a member of AIAA, APS, ASEE, ASME, NSBE, and SIAM.

Vision Statement:
The Eastern States Section of the Combustion Institute and the Combustion Institute are the premier organizations for the study of combustion and related sciences. However, I believe there is a lot of work that can be done to make the organization more publicly known and influential. My vision involves developing programs to expand the attendance of undergraduate students at the biannual meeting. I view it as important for the leading combustion organization in the US to facilitate the development of the next generation of combustion researchers. Exposing students to the combustion community at an earlier career stage is one way to achieve this. Further, another goal is to make the research community more representative of the general US population. To me, this means making explicit efforts to target students from a broad range of institutions including women’s colleges and minority serving institutions.
