Jim Driscoll current CI President (2016 – 2020), Thierry Poinsot, Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, former CI President (2012-2016), and Ron Hanson at the 37th International Symposium on Combustion in Dublin, Ireland

In this second installment of a seven-part series of articles, The Combustion Institute recognizes combustion scientists who were honored with medals and awards during the 37th International Symposium on Combustion. Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus is the 2018 recipient of the Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal, for sustained, brilliant research in combustion chemistry, especially of bio-derived fuels, through the application of laser spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

Prof. Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus has been a professor of Physical Chemistry at Bielefeld University, Germany since 1994. She began her career as part of the scientific staff of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) in Stuttgart. There were research periods at Stanford University, SRI International, USA, and ONERA, France which opened perspectives for a broad range of topics combining chemistry, physics and engineering. Her habilitation at Stuttgart University was followed rapidly by her transition to Bielefeld.

Prof. Kohse-Höinghaus has been the recipient of honors, professorships and lectures in many countries. Prestigious honors include the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Giulio Natta Medal in Chemical Engineering and Lectio Magistralis of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, the Award for International Scientific Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese National Friendship Award and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People’s Republic of China. She is an esteemed member of several academies and she has served in numerous functions in professional societies and academic organizations. For The Combustion Institute, she has served on the Board, as editor of Combustion and Flame and as the President from 2012-2016.

Prof. Kohse-Höinghaus is a dedicated teacher and mentor. She is especially proud of having assisted many early-career researchers to build their careers in academia and industry.

Please join The Combustion Institute in congratulating Prof. Kohse-Höinghaus and the other honored 2018 award winners in the international combustion community. Questions regarding awards may be directed to: Office@CombustionInstitute.org.
