During the opening session of the 36th International Symposium on Combustion, participants are invited to attend the Hottel Lecture. Thierry Poinsot, Research Director at CNRS, France, will deliver this year’s presentation titled, Prediction and Control of Combustion Instabilities in Real Engines.

Dr. Poinsot’s authoritative paper explores progress in the field of thermoacoustic combustion instabilities in propulsion engines such as rockets or gas turbines. For more than a century of combustion history, instabilities have been studied in in simple laminar configurations and in laboratory-scale turbulent flames. Dr. Poinsot’s research provides an understanding that instabilities are also encountered in real engines but new mechanisms appear in these systems because of obvious differences with academic burners.

The Hottel Lecture is named after the late Hoyt C. Hottel (1903–1998), professor in the department of Chemical Engineering at MIT and co-founder of The Combustion Institute. As the paramount plenary lecture of the symposium, a distinguished leader in a field of combustion is selected biennially to deliver a presentation.

The 36th Symposium will convene at the Coex Convention & Exhibition Center in Seoul, Korea from Sunday, 31 July through Friday, 5 August 2016. The biennial Symposium provides a scientific venue for sharing ideas and experiences on the development and applications of combustion science. Coex is conveniently located in the heart of the city’s business district.

As an internationally recognized site with an active combustion research program, Seoul offers our combustion community world-class opportunities to interact with scientists and companies in an exciting and dynamic environment. Graced  by the Hangang River and the majestic Mt. Namsan, visitors experience the perfect combination of natural surroundings and modern urban splendor. Seoul has been Korea’s capital for more than 600 years. Traces of the city’s ancient legacy can be found in its museums and national treasures.
