The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration has released the third call for proposals for the NASA Research Announcement (NRA) entitled, Use of the NASA Physical Sciences Informatics System. Ground-based research proposals are being solicited to generate new scientific insights by utilizing experimental data residing in NASA’s Physical Sciences Informatics (PSI) system. This online database provides investigators access to the raw and processed experimental data from past and current physical science microgravity flight experiments conducted on the International Space Station and other platforms. In this way, the NRA promotes rapid, multiple investigations resulting in more scientists participating in ISS research.

The third call for proposals, Appendix C to the NRA, solicits proposals in five research areas – Combustion Science, Complex Fluids, Fluid Physics, Fundamental Physics and Materials Science – for which eligible experimental data will available in the PSI by the proposal due date of 15 December 2016.

NASA is accepting grant proposals from a wide range of audiences in the physical sciences. The call is open to two types of investigators: established researchers and graduate students. Eligibility requirements and further instructions for both types of investigators are provided in the solicitation document. According to the umbrella NRA, the “solicitation is applicable to researchers in all categories of U.S. and non-U.S. organizations, including educational institutions, industry, nonprofit organizations, NASA Centers and other U.S. Government agencies.”

For an introduction, refer to the synopsis posted before the solicitation was released.

Refer to the full solicitation for complete details of the NRA.

To explore the kinds of research NASA has selected from the previous calls for proposals for this NRA, the selections are listed on the NASA Web releases connected to Appendix A and Appendix B. Out of the ten selections to date, three have been in the combustion research area: one from Appendix A and two from Appendix B.
